What are Registered Interns (Social Work, Mental Health, & Marriage & Family)?

They are clinicians who have a provisional license status. Each state regulates licenses for mental health clinicians and may call this phase something different. In Florida, to be a fully licensed Clinical Social Worker, Mental Health Counselor, or Marriage & Family Therapist, there are rigorous educational and practice requirements that must be met first.

Before becoming a registered inter, a person must:

  • Complete an accredited master’s program - Generally, this will be a Master’s in Social Work, Family & Marriage & Family Therapy, and/or Mental Health Counseling;

    and

  • Accrue up to 900 hours of clinical experience while in the master’s program, depending on the program.

Once they have fulfilled the above requirements, they can then apply for their registered internship status.

The mandatory Registered Intern phase will last no less than 2 years. During that time, they must have a Qualified Supervisor of record who works with the person until they are fully licensed. They will meet with their Qualified Supervisor at least every other week until fully licensed. Also, Registered Interns must also have accrued a minimum of 1500 clinical hours post-graduation in addition to the hours accrued during their master’s program.

Are Registered Interns (Social Work, Mental Health, & Marriage & Family) real therapists?

Absolutely!

While the term “Intern” might bring to mind an unskilled novice, this is absolutely not the case with Registered Interns in our field.

Registered Interns are in a provisional/restricted licensure stage as dictated by the Florida Statute. This phase is strictly for post-graduate experience. These laws are in place to help the new clinician transition to full licensure.

All Registered Interns and fully licensed therapists at Grow Beyond Counseling have extensive training and stay on top of the latest research and techniques. We pride ourselves on the ongoing knowledge, skill, and experience of our therapists.
